Homophobia at Shakopee

I began reading the article titled, “TRANS BEHIND BARS: HOMOPHOBIA PERSISTS AT SHAKOPEE PRISON AFTER END TO NO-TOUCH POLICY” published on the 30th of September, 2019. The author, Adryan Corcione, writes about how in Shakopee prison there has been a lot of movement going on regarding the treatment of inmates at the prison. Corcione argues that inmates have been discriminated against based on their sexual orientation or gender expression and we should come together to make a change. There have also been several cases of inmates being denied hormone replacement therapy (HRT). A no-touch policy has also been implemented to prevent inmates from touching others. The inmates would be punished for a simple high-five.
I believe that the audience this article is intended to reach is the LGBTQ+ community and its supporters. People who are liberal and willing to help with this situation Shakopee inmates are experiencing. The reason why I say this is mean to the left party is that the LGBTQ+ community has been a topic of discussion and also very controversial between the conservative and the liberal side. Many people would argue that everyone should have the right to express their sexual orientation without being harassed or discriminated against. On the other hand, many will argue that inmates should not be able to have that right and therefore should be constricted to everything they do such as receiving hormone replacement therapy.
Corcione has built his credibility by stating and referring back to several communication media in which the information had been released. I believe his credibility is established also because of his word choice and the vocabulary used. When expressing his argument, it is clear and backed up with sufficient reasoning. Corcione reflects over the several aspects of what LGBTQ+ inmates go through and the realization of what they're going through also reflects his credibility to ensure the reader takes action and believes his argument.
The argument that Corcione is trying to convey is that we should do more for the inmates in not only Shakopee but also other prisons in which inmates are being denied treatment to be themselves such as HRT. Corcione states several examples of harassment that the inmates experience due to their sexual orientation or their gender expression. An example is ‘“Just us sitting next to each other has been a problem,” Pendleton shared.’, this shows proof that people are receiving hate and unjust treatment by the prison. The logic of his argument is that everyone is created equal and that we all deserve the right to be whom we want to. If that includes receiving hormonal replacement therapy then so be it because no one should have a say over that. I agree with Corcione and believe we should take action to protect these inmates from harsh treatment.
